What is a WIKI? As defined by Wiki.org, a wiki is “the simplest online database that could possibly work.” It was named after the Hawaiian word wiki-wiki meaning quick. A good example of a wiki is wikipedia wich is a search engine online that is maintained by anyone. In an organization a wiki can be used to get information from different people in the company without having to meet with them. You can just post something on a wiki and have the other people at to it since they are able to access the page, and the good thing about it is that you can make it accesible by only certain people in the organization. Wikis also keep track of who makes changes and when they did it, so there wont be any confusion on who did what work and when they got it in by. An organization should consider using a wiki when they need to establish a company intraned quickly and without spending alot of money, decreasing security and durability. Its also good for organizations to use if they need a central location where shared documents can be viewed and changed by a large team that is not in the same place. An organization might want to rethink using a wiki if they need to use complex file formats because some wikis can only support text or HTML files. You might also want to rethink using a wiki if you dont have a staff member who can take responsibility for what goes on there and what happens with it. You really need someone who can devote there time to running and updating the program. The difference between a wiki and traditional content management systems is that wikis are cheap, easy to implement into your work place, and they dont require a massive software rollout. Another difference is that after the initial setup, users control the wiki not administrators, which makes it alot easier. Finally a traditional project management tool cannot reproduce the environment of cllaboration and involvement that wikis can. Some of the best practices for the adoption of a wiki within a company are, if you need something cheap that can get the job done. also if you are a business who needs to pass information to teams who dont work near each other than this program would work for you. Over all if you are a business who is just getting started and you are looking for a good program that is cheap, easy to use and works well with getting information to different people around the world, than you should consider using Wikis.
